Our Pet of the Month - January 2012
Written by Teryn Hogue:
A while back, Mr. Gamet brought a dog that he had found running in the street. He came in holding this little brown ball of fluff, that was extremely dirty and matted and looked like she had been on her own for quite a bit of time. The first thing we did was scan her for a microchip, and after the disappointment of not finding one, he decided to get her seen by the doctor, just to make sure she was healthy. She was examined by Dr. Bach, who pronounced her overall healthy, just in serious need of some grooming and attention!
We gave her a deep cleansing bath, and shaved all of the many mats covering her body. She started out as a brown matted ball of fur. We couldn’t even begin to guess what breed she might be. Any physical attributes were completely hidden by the dirt and mats. By the end of that day, she was a clean, white poodle/terrier mix, and looked like a completely different dog. When Mr. Gamet came back to pick her up the next day, I suggested the name “Mattie”, and everyone agreed that was a perfect name for the little matted dog we had fallen in love with.
I’m glad Mattie found Mr. Gamet and decided to jump into his car that day. She has a lifetime of spoiling ahead of her!

“The Story of Mattie”, written by Gerry & Gail Gamet:
I had just finished my weekly afternoon ukulele practice, and was on my way home. Outside the car…the sunshine is bright and 105.
I had stopped for a red light when I see a ‘little cotton ball’ run across the street in front of me. This is a very busy section and if someone did not do something, this ‘little cotton ball’ was going to be run over.
I parked the car and started looking for the ‘cotton ball’…and was quickly joined by a young man who also saw the ‘little cotton ball’ run across the street. We walked and ran for about eight blocks (in 105 degrees)…being joined by several other good Samaritans…all trying to catch this ‘little cotton ball’ before something terrible happened. Finally, the ‘little cotton ball’ gave up…hot and exhausted from running away from those that wanted to protect ‘her’. Since I had started the ‘rescue’…I was ‘elected’ to follow through with the rest of the ‘saving’. I put the dirty and heavily matted ‘little cotton ball’ in my car and headed to Pet Medical Center in Temecula.
The first staff people greeting me at the counter were Manager Teryn and Receptionist Alyssa.I told them what had happened and agreed that I was the ‘new steward’ of this ‘little cotton ball’. ‘She’ was admitted for a general checkup, a rough shave, a quick bath and a stay overnight with a good meal and soft bed.
The following day, Technician Adam informed me that the dog was so matted that even her tail was matted securely to a hind leg and very under fed. It was obvious that someone just did not care about this female Terrier/Poodle mix. Manager Teryn came to the rescue again with the obvious name suggestion of ‘MATTIE’…which we agreed to immediately.
Over the next two weeks, every time I was back in Hemet, I looked for ‘lost dog’ posters/flyers. None were ever found.
It did not take long before Mattie worked herself into our family and hearts. She is a little ball of energy…and almost house broken. She has received her shots, received a ‘chip’ and was spayed.
We are grateful to Dr. Bach and her professional staff. They were an integral part in the ‘rescue’ of Mattie.
