Our Pet of the Month - July 2010

By Nancy Patterson (owner):

Pet of the Month - July, 2010 - Laverne Patteron“Laverne”!! How many Laverne’s do you know?

In our family, “Laverne” will always be one of two honey and white female basset hounds that came to live with us in March 2003. As adorable eight week old puppies, we considered several popular female duos when “Laverne” and “Shirley” was suggested and quickly chosen. Once that was settled, identifying who was who was easy, the barking pup with the almost perfect white “L” marking between her shoulders on her mostly honey colored body had to be “Laverne”. “Shirley” became “Shirley” by default.

Like their television namesakes, our sisters were not the smartest or most beautiful of dogs, they never learned a command or were able to do a single trick, but after all they were basset hounds. “Laverne” in particular was not perfect, she had a bent tail, probably broken at birth and liked to sleep on the couch. She also liked to bark, not so much at home, but when we would take walks, she barked a lot at nothing in particular. Perhaps she barked just to let everyone know that she was in the neighborhood. After all she was somewhat of a celebrity as she and her sister were centerfolds in the November issue of Animal Friends of the Valley 2005 calendar and appeared a second time with “Shirley” and newly adopted basset hound brother “Romeo” in 2007. “Vernie” wasn’t perfect but any flaws she may have had were totally overshadowed by her good nature, friendliness and love. “Laverne” never met a person she didn’t like or who didn’t like her.

It is said that the good die young and I guess that applies to dogs as well. “Laverne” was only 6-½ years old when she crossed the Rainbow Bridge in June 2009. I don’t know if her tail is still bent or if she is barking, but I do know “Laverne” is with friends and our almost perfect hound will never be forgotten.

I chose “Laverne” Patterson as my pet of the month. “Laverne” was a beautiful Bassett Hound who would come in all the time with her sister, “Shirley”. It was such a sight to see when they could walk in the door and start “singing” to us. Every time she came in, I had to sit on the floor with her to say hello to her and give her lots of love. She was such a sweetheart!!

“Laverne” was diagnosed with Addison ’s Disease, which affects the adrenal glands. It actually gave her a beautiful wavy coat. Unfortunately, this disease was what ended her life.

“Laverne” will be greatly missed, but I feel better knowing that heaven is complete now that she is there.

I love you “Laverne”, and will never, ever forget you.
